The Water Trust appoints Peter Kaddu as new Executive Director

KAMPALA, UG – The Water Trust is pleased to announce Peter Kaddu as the organization’s new Executive Director.

Peter will lead The Water Trust in an ambitious chapter of growth, supporting the global organization, headquartered now in Uganda, as it scales programs throughout Uganda and East Africa.

Peter brings more than 20 years of experience to the role. He comes to The Water Trust from Last Mile Health, where he was the Global Managing Director for Health Systems Strengthening, leading a globally dispersed multi-disciplinary team of experts to drive digital health, capacity building, health financing, and clinical programmatic initiatives spanning Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. Before his work with Last Mile Health, Peter served as Director of Health for Living Goods where he established monitoring, evaluation, research and learning systems, and led the integration of nutrition, family planning, and immunization programming into the organization’s robust Community Health Program.

Peter also contributed to Uganda’s COVID-19 response as a key technical advisor to the Ministry of Health’s health worker capacity-building program. He has served as an external expert for the World Health Organization, helping develop guidance for capacity building of health workers during emergencies. A champion of innovation, he was a member of the challenge leadership team of judges for the MIT Solve Global Health Equity Challenge in 2023. A trained medical doctor and public health specialist, Peter holds a master’s degree in public health from the Royal Tropical Institute/Vrije University (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from Makerere University (Kampala, Uganda).

Joining The Water Trust as the Executive Director gives me an awesome opportunity to lead a highly impactful organization, and work with very skilled and passionate staff and board members,” said Peter. “The work of this organization speaks for itself. It is impactful, community-led, and data-driven, with an implementation model that ensures the sustainability of water points and the benefits thereof. I look forward to seeing this impact deepened and broadened in the future."

“We are excited to welcome Peter to The Water Trust as our Executive Director,” said Ben Andrew, Board Chair at The Water Trust. “He brings to The Water Trust a breadth of experience from organizations that share our values, and the leadership skills and technical expertise we need for our next phase of growth.”

This leadership transition is a significant milestone, marking the success of the multi-year plan by The Water Trust to become an African-led NGO, with 100% of staff now Ugandan.

“Proximate leadership makes us more effective,” said Chris Prottas, former Executive Director and now Board Member at The Water Trust. “This transition makes The Water Trust stronger, and will serve as a great example of successfully transitioning leadership positions to talented local leaders in the non-profit sector.”

“We are excited to have taken strides in our journey to be an African-led organization," said Evelyn Mugenyi, Board Member at The Water Trust. “Peter is a remarkable leader to take us to the next phase of becoming one of the most effective African-led NGOs in East Africa.”

Taddeo Muriuki, Board Member at The Water Trust as well as Chief Government Relations Officer with Village Enterprise, noted the importance of Peter’s appointment. “The Water Trust is at a critical juncture in its growth with many opportunities to scale our impact in Uganda and beyond. We are delighted to have a leader on the ground to build partnerships with governments, multilaterals, NGOs, and funders to scale what we know works, and pioneer new solutions.”
